MNP Won’t Solve Problem of Poor Quality of Service – Gbenga Adebayo, chairman, ALTON
Gbenga Adebayo, engineer and chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, ALTON, is one of the respected voices in the Nigerian telecoms sector. About a year ago, when the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, stepped up efforts towards flagging off Mobile Number Portability, MNP, having earlier muted the idea sometime in 2006, Adebayo was one of those who welcomed the scheme, but argued that Nigeria was not ripe for it because of some prevailing situations in the country particularly, the recurrent and spontaneous shut down of base stations across the country. He also argued that the capacities of the networks…

Private Jet Boom: More Nigerians Fly in Style

Private Jet Boom: More Nigerians Fly in Style
In spite of the economic hardship in the country, a growing number of affluent citizens are acquiring private jets, whose present fleet surpasses the combined number of commercial aircraft in the country   As a business executive, Robert Habjanic, director, After-Sales, Bombardier Business Jets, operates a very tight schedule. Therefore, for him, spending more than a day on a business trip means the stakes are really high. It was therefore instructive when Habjanic and his team spent four days in Nigeria to explore business opportunities and also attend a training workshop on Aviation and Space Law with the theme:…

The ‘Bull’ and His Business Empire

Published in Top Story Written by Chikodi Okereocha
The ‘Bull’ and His Business Empire
Michael Ishola Adenuga, chairman of Globacom, fondly called ‘The Bull’, has, against all odds, single-handedly charged his way to the top of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate spanning the critical sectors of the economy   In and around the lounge on the ground floor of the Mike Adenuga Towers located on high-class Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria’s financial capital, the atmosphere was charged with excitement, Friday, May 3. That day, members of staff of Globacom, the indigenous telecoms giant, took the time off to roll out the drums to celebrate with Michael Adenuga Jnr, their chairman, who turned…

Fuel Subsidy: Jonathan Got It Wrong – Kalu Idika Kalu
Kalu Idika Kalu, who served Nigeria twice as minister of finance, is credited for setting the tone for some of the economic reforms in the country since 1985. As commissioner for finance in Imo State, during the military administration of General Ike Nwachukwu, he had prepared a document, which later became handy when General Ibrahim Babangida, former head of state, invited Kalu to serve at the federal level in 1985. Kalu later expounded his views, which centered on the abolition of the land use decree; adjustment of the exchange rate, the interest rate; capital debt management, privatisation and…

Food for All through Genetics

Published in Top Story Written by Ayodeji Adeyemi
Prof. Mohammed Ishiyaku
In the next three years, Nigeria hopes to join the league of nations that have attained food sufficiency through genetically modified crops, but not without first crossing some hurdles   The midday savannah sun was almost at its peak, casting long flickering shadows over the dusty brick walls of a laboratory block inside the Institute of Agriculture Research, Zaria, Kaduna State, when professor Mohammed Ishiyaku, flanked by two associates, made a quick dash into one of the blocks. After meandering through a labyrinth of passageways, the molecular geneticists pulled his full frame to a halt at the doorstep…

There Is No Rift Between the President and Governor Amaechi - Reuben Abati

Published in Top Story
Reuben Abati
Reuben Abati, special adviser to the President on media and publicity, in this interview with Anayochukwu Agbo, senior associate editor, says the President has no hand in the political situation in Rivers State. Excerpts.   Accusing fingers are pointing at the President and his wife for allegedly precipitating political crisis in Rivers State for personal interests; would you say there is no justification for this allegation? Absolutely no justification, other than mischief. This is again the handiwork of mischief-makers who are perpetually disseminating black information with an obvious intent to discredit the President for their own selfish reasons.…

The Plot Against Amaechi

Published in Top Story Written by Anayochukwu Agbo
Gov. Amaechi
Despite several denials of any involvement in the political crisis in Rivers State and the travails of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, many believe that the Presidency still lurks in the shadow, fanning embers of the situation   A modern theatre of the absurd is unfolding in Rivers State.  Since the new state executive working committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Felix Obuah was sworn in on April 16 by Bamanga Tukur, the party’s national chairman, the hitherto peaceful ‘Treasure Base of the Nation’ has been turned into a theatre of war of sorts with comic dimensions.…
