May: The Month of Emergency

Published in Blog Written by Raymond Mordi
In Nigeria’s 52 years of independence, the month of May has featured prominently in the declaration of emergency rule to address political upheaval   By RAYMOND MORDI   In the political history of this country, May has been largely a month of distress. For about five times emergency rule was imposed, three have occurred in the month of May, while one each took place in October and December. Though political wrangling, violence and insecurity are not new to Nigerian politics, they coincidentally seem to boil over in May.   For instance, crisis started brewing shortly after independence in the…

Time to Tackle Our Leaders

Published in Blog Written by Tundun Adeyemo
There is a difference between life in the West and in Nigeria. Tuesday, May 7 was Bank holiday in the United Kingdom, UK. It meant most businesses and, of course, the banks were closed. It availed families an extra day to spend together. With the gorgeous weather, predictably, the beaches, zoos, parks, malls were filled with sun lovers basking in the sun. Some people had barbeques, others stayed indoors, resting.   A typical holiday might be May Day, Christmas, Easter or any of the Muslim festivals in Nigeria. For those employed by the state or federal government, a…

Ferguson: The End of an Era

Published in Blog Written by Ayodeji Adeyemi
For close to 27 years he held sway at the Old Trafford, base of the Manchester United Football Club, but Sir Alex Ferguson, the iconic manager of Manchester United bowed out last week, spelling uncertain future for the team he led to win several titles   It was one announcement that literally jolted the world of football. Indeed, when news crept out of Old Trafford on all four that Sir Alex Ferguson, the larger-than-life manager of Manchester United Football Club had finally thrown in the towel last Wednesday, the footballing universe was momentarily sent into a state of suspension.…

It’s Our Procurement, Where’s the Info?

Published in Blog Written by Ayodele Akinkuotu
A workshop held in Akure, capital of Ondo State mid-March. It was organised by the Upline Resources Foundation and the aim was the sensitisation of civil society organisations based in the South-west on the implementation of the Freedom of Information, FoI, Act. Participants at the workshop were reportedly treated to a documentary from Kenya, a country that is not one of the nine African countries that already have a freedom of information law. The documentary was the brainchild of Muslims for Human Rights, MUHURI, a Kenyan non-governmental organisation. The title of the work is, “It’s Our Money, Where…

Still on Nigerian Christianity

Published in Blog Written by Tundun Adeyemo
It is safe to assert that the worship of God in Nigeria is similar to the age-old practice of Baal worship. A lot of what happens in our churches cannot be found in the New Testament from where church modelling is expected to originate.   Sermons from the pulpit are filled with condemnation including lists of dos and don’ts. Holiness is sold to us as a life without external adornments. Yet, amongst all religions, Christianity is about grace. Is it fair to suggest that God will lock out of heaven those of us who refuse to give up our trousers,…

NFF: Enough of These Pranks

Published in Blog Written by Anthony Akaeze
A lot has happened in Nigeria’s football circle in the last two months since the Super Eagles’ shocking triumph in South Africa. Indeed, there has been no dull moment. First was the news about Emmanuel Emenike, the highest goal scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations, saying that he had been used and dumped, as he claimed that Stephen Keshi and Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, officials had failed to contact him to inquire about his state of health following the injury he sustained at the nations cup. Before the dust raised by that controversy would die down, Joseph…

Journey of the Maggie

Published in Blog Written by Tundun Adeyemo
The death and burial of stateswoman Margaret Thatcher remind Nigerian women that there is a gender deficit within our politics. Even though we have some level of participation nationally, Nigeria is still decades away from a female Presidency. Our politics perpetrates and recycles some thugs and money politicians thus making the playing field for newcomers without cash impossible.   Admittedly, it takes a certain amount of courage to get involved in politics. The preferable option is to cheer from the sidelines, taking the proverbial sword from the comfort of our iPads, BlackBerries, tablets, laptops and desktops. Many people choose…
