War Against Peace
The killing of Babakura Fugu, the only opening for dialogue with Boko Haram dims any hope of a quick resolution of the impasse If President Goodluck Jonathan and his security chiefs had any romantic ideas about the seriousness of Boko Haram, the killing of Babakura Fugu, brother-in-law of Mohammed Yusuf, late leader of Boko Haram, Saturday, September 17, two days after receiving former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in Maiduguri may have convinced them that they are not dealing with Boys Scouts. The summary execution of his host was shocking even to the general who had seen enough bestiality as a soldier. Obasanjo, a known continental volunteer in conflict resolution, who said his visit to embattled Maidugri was entirely…

Who Will Stop This Madness?
Plateau State explodes again in blood and violence, shattering all hope for a lasting peace In the early morning of Monday September 5, the scene in Zakaleo, a little village in Babale, Jos North Local Government was typical of the now familiar tragic sights in Plateau State. A handful of wailing women and children surrounded the corpses of seven people killed by midnight attackers who came with guns, cutlasses and knives. Those killed included a 74-year-old man, his wife and two grandchildren. Four of the dead were burnt beyond recognition when the invaders set their houses on fire and locked the doors from outside. The previous night, strangers reportedly killed four persons in their homes in Kuru, near…

"Reducing Maternal Mortality Gives Me Great Joy"- Olusegun Mimiko
Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has achieved unprecedented success in health care since he took office in February 2009. His state was adjudged by the World Bank as having the worst indices in terms of maternal and child care when he took oath of office. However, the hardworking medical practitioner-turned politician has begun reversing the trend and he is fast turning his state into a haven for pregnant women and children under five years. Sitting in his simple but detailed office inside the State Secretariat in Akure, Mimiko speaks about his passion and hopes for expanding the pilot projects of the Abiye (Safe Motherhood) and Mother and Child Hospital that have become important icons for the success of his…

Mimiko’s Caring Heart
The government of Olusegun Mimiko is leading an ambitious plan to turn Ondo State into a medical haven for pregnant women and children Until recently, Ondo State bore the World Bank’s tag of having the worst indices in terms of healthcare in Nigeria. One woman died every 16 minutes during childbirth and one in 10 children died before their first birthday. When women die, households are thrown into mourning, children are scattered around to live with relatives and families’ poverty levels increase. The strain on the society at large is also unquantifiable, as those children become tomorrow’s street urchins and prostitutes. When Olusegun Mimiko became governor of the state after a prolonged electoral battle in 2009, how to…

Racing Against the Tide
In the face of unpredictable weather changes and poor sanitary attitude, flood-prone states in Nigeria appear to be racing against the tide When it started raining in Ibadan, Oyo State at about 5.30pm on Friday, August 26, Sikiru Adisa, a driver, thanked his luck. And the reason for such a feeling is not far-fetched. Unlike his colleagues who may be trapped in rain-induced traffic, Adisa was safely home with his father and four children. But, as the rain continued unabated, for several hours his mood changed. Adisa started getting worried. As a young man, he had witnessed the Ogunpa River flooding that swept through Ibadan in August 1980, killing hundreds and demolishing several houses after a 10-hour rainfall.…

Tales of a Black Friday
Incessant bomb blasts take deep tolls on the victims, their families and the whole country Her voice shook as she prayed for quick recovery for 22-year-old Clement Obi, one of the victims of the Friday, August 26 bomb blast at the United Nations, UN House in Abuja. Overwhelmed by the lad’s agony, tears welled up in her eyes and trickled down her well made up face. It was one of those occasions when it was very dignified to cry, and nobody appeared embarrassed as Patience Jonathan, the First Lady wiped her tears for the next ward. Rosaline, elder sister of the victim, who was summoned from her base in Makurdi, Benue State, was touched by the First Lady’s humanity.…
