18th National Sports Festival: Lagos Table Tennis players to train in China

Published in Sports Written by Anthony Akaeze
As part of its effort to lead the revival of Table Tennis in Nigeria, the Lagos State government has concluded plans to send 12 of its players to China on a training tour.   The trip, which is sponsored by the Lekki Free Trade Zone Development Company in partnership with the state government, is the latest evidence of synergy between the Lagos State government and the private sector in the area of sports development.   The players, six males and six females, will be accompanied on the trip by John Peters, technical director of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, LSTTA, and two coaches: Dele Olasumbo, a.k.a 'Malawi' and Michael Oyebode. They are expected to depart the country on Sunday September…

Falconets to Tackle Host, Japan for 3rd place

Falconets to Tackle Host, Japan for 3rd place
After losing to the US female team through what many had argued was one of the lowest points of referee decision in the ongoing FIFA Under-20 Female World Cup, the Falconets would now meet Japan who lost 0-3 to Germany in the other semi final match played on Tuesday, September 4.   Both teams will compete for the third place in a match to be played on September 8. The game that traditionally precedes the final match will be played in Tokyo just like the final match.

USA defeats Falconets in FIFA Under 20 World Cup
The Falconets, Nigeria's Under-20 team, have lost 0-2 to the USA in the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA under-20 World Cup in Japan.   Despite having a large chunk of possession, especially in the second half, a combination of poor finishes, saw the Falconets concede a goal in each half.   The Falconets will now play either Japan or Germany - who would meet in the second semi-final match - in the third place play-off.

Falconets Sail into Semis

Published in Sports Written by Anthony Akaeze
Falconets Sail into Semis
Nigeria, on Thursday, inched a step further towards actualising its goal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup competition in Japan. The Falconets, as the Nigerian female national team is called, advanced to the semi final stage after beating Mexico 1-0. The match held at the National Stadium, Tokyo, Japan.   Desire Oparanozie, the Nigerian striker, proved the match winner in the extra time of the encounter with a perfectly struck header that gave Cecilia Santiago, the Mexican goalkeeper no chance. It compensated for all the misses the Falconets had recorded before then. The team ought to have long wrapped up victory before the 109th minute clincher had they been luckier. Oparanozie, for instance, had one of Nigeria’s best chances…

London 2012 Olympics: Why Nigeria Failed Again

Published in Sports Written by Adekunle Yusuf
London 2012 Olympics: Why Nigeria Failed Again
As it was in the past, a combination of poor funding, late preparations and lack of a well thought-out programme on athletes’ training and management account for Nigeria’s abysmal failure at the just concluded London Olympics     It was a failure long predicted before it happened. And by the time the Nigerian contingent returned from the London 2012 Olympics, it was a bountiful harvest of shame, as many had predicted before the commencement of the games. Instead of counting laurels and reveling in the concomitant golden celebrations as a lot of countries did, Team Nigeria wallowed in shame and regrets, failing as usual to justify its participation in the games. It returned without putting the country’s name on the…

Nigeria’s Gifts to the World

Published in Sports Written by Olusegun Adeosun
Nigeria’s Gifts to the World
While there seemed to be a medal drought for the Nigerian contingent at the London 2012 Olympics, an athlete with Nigerian background won medal for another country. It was a terrific moment for Christine Ijeoma Ohuruogu, a star athlete for Great Britain, when she won a silver medal in the Women’s 400 metres at the just concluded Olympics. For her, sprinting for Great Britain is a thing to cherish for the rest of her life. Ohuruogu who was born to Nigerian parents of Igbo extraction 28 years ago has competed for Great Britain at other international competitions like the Commonwealth and the last Beijing Olympics where she won gold medal.   Ohuruogu is not the only Nigerian-born athlete that competed…

The Buzz at Stratford Station

Published in Sports Written by Tundun Adeyemo
The Buzz at Stratford Station
The heavy buzz at the Stratford Station, home station of the Olympic Park, hid the fact that only yards away Nigeria came to the United Kingdom in the form of Nigeria House.  Whilst nations of the world sought seriously to contend for medals, Nigeria House became a temporary mecca of sorts for music, theatre, poetry, fashion exhibitions and films from Nollywood.   As you walk into the white building called Nigeria House, you are greeted not with talking drums but with half filled market stalls, which badly needed people to visit and shop.  But last week when TELL visited, many Nigerians stayed true to their pockets and refused to buy anything they considered irrelevant, save food and drinks. It did…

…Retired police officers called in to guard Olympic Games

…Retired police officers called in to guard Olympic Games
With just over a fortnight until the Olympic Games begin, former police officers said they have been asked to boost the numbers at the Olympic Park in east London over fears of a shortfall. Security company, G4S, has a £300 million contract to protect the Olympics, but concerns were reported by the Times over the training and accreditation of its recruits. Martin Johnson, a former detective constable with the Metropolitan Police, said: “They wanted me to go up to the Olympic Park this week and get a uniform. They must have a shortfall (in guards), there was no mention of vetting. They are assuming that ex-police officers are all right, but anything could have happened in the 18 months since…
