Developing Future Stars
Described as a breeding ground for football talent in Nigeria, this year’s edition of the NNPC/Shell Cup may have lived up to its billing Chinedu Obasi, Femi Opabumi, Ambrose Vanzekin, Isaac Promise, Solomon Okoronkwo, and Ejike Uzoenyi – Super Eagles midfielder, all have one thing in common: they are products of the NNPC/Shell Cup football championship for all secondary schools in Nigeria. “They are too numerous to mention. Many of them abound in the foreign and local leagues,” said Shola Akinwale, national coordinator of the championship and managing director, Worldwide Sports Limited, championship consultants. Since the first edition in 1999, thousands more have also come for a taste of the limelight on the football field. And, as previous editions…

One Victory, Many Gains
In many ways than one, winning the Africa Cup of Nations trophy is a major opportunity for the Super Eagles players, coaches and even the Nigerian Premier League to reinvent themselves Indeed, success has many fathers, as well as ladders. The Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, success at the 29th edition in South Africa has seen them move up 22 places from 52nd position to 30th in the FIFA/Coca Cola world rankings, the country’s best position since August 2010. Before the present ranking, Nigeria had also placed 32nd, 43rd and 52nd respectively. Rankings aside, the rewards for success have also been flowing for the team like excess wine at a lavish party. For one,…

Nigeria Beat Burkina Faso to Win 2013 African Cup of Nations
In a pulsating final played on Sunday, February 10, the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Stallions of Burkina Faso 1-0 to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa Sunday Mba’s lone spectacular strike in the 40th minute was enough to win Nigeria its third Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in the 2013 final against the Stallions of Burkina Faso played on Sunday, February 10, at the Soccer City, Johannesburg, South Africa. Mba, a player who plies his trade in the Nigeria Premier League, wore jersey number 19, and more interestingly ended the country’s 19-year wait for AFCON title. Nigeria last won the AFCON title on home soil in 1980 and 1994…

Fresh from the Hunting Grounds
The National Sports Festival has long proven to be a veritable ground for discovering fresh talent and this year’s edition was not different It is considered to be the biggest sporting fiesta in the country, and indeed it is. The National Sports Festival, NSF, which ended last weekend in Lagos, indeed lived up to its billing as a great sporting fiesta, Nigeria’s version of the Olympics. From the East, West, North and South of Nigeria, athletes and officials converged on Lagos, Nigeria’s former capital, to contest for honours in the respective games. As at the time of going to press last week, Delta State was leading on the medals table with 42 gold medals, 36 silver and…

AFCON 2013: Between the Minnows and the Giants
Like past editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa 2013 will be a straight battle between the minnows and giants of African football Change, they say, is the only constant in life. In football, perhaps the only constant factor is its unpredictability. Like the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, proved, sometimes even the best football pundits can go spectacularly wrong, as the Chipolopolos (Copper Bullets) of Zambia tore the form books and rewrote the script to suit their own footballing history by beating tournament favourites Cote D’Ivoire on penalties in the 2012 final. It was the first time Zambia would be lifting the AFCON trophy, after finishing as runners-up on…

AFCON 2013: The Promise of Football and Beauty
Besides the football fiesta that would be offered by the Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013 promises to be a celebration of culture, nature and beauty When coach Stephen Keshi and his Super Eagles team jet out to South Africa in January 2013 for the 29th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, it would be with a mixed feeling of déjà vu and high expectations. Keshi would have continental glory firmly in his sights, after he had captained the Eagles as a player to win its second AFCON trophy in Tunisia 1994. For the players, it would be an opportunity to redeem their image after a poor outing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup…

The Squandering of Riches and Talents
Nigeria remains a basket case in the management and sustenance of human and material resources especially in the sports arena The main bowl of the Abuja National Stadium finally got a hasty shave on Saturday, September 15. Even at that, it will still need a total excavation of stubborn roots and replanting of the grass before a football game could take place in the nine-year-old once magnificent N54 billion stadium. It took a public exposure in the media to draw the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan to visit the stadium on September 12 when the Super Eagles were training for their Nations Cup qualifier game with Liberia at the practice pitch. Like everything Nigeria, Bolaji Abdullahi, minister of…
