As actions continue at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations since January 21 without the participation of the Super Eagles, Nigerian footballers, sport entrepreneurs and football lovers count their losses “When we don’t qualify for a Nations Cup, that hurts as it means we don’t belong to the best teams on the continent.” With these words, Sunday Oliseh, former Super Eagles’ captain, appears to have captured the mood and sentiment of all Nigerians as the 28th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, ACN, took off on Saturday, January 21 in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. As a member of the last golden generation, the 1994 ACN winning team, Oliseh’s hurt is understandable. But his concern may pale into insignificance…

Keshi's Eagles held by Angola
Many football-loving Nigerians were indifferent to Wednesday’s international friendly that saw Stephen Keshi’s home based Super Eagles team held to a goalless draw by Angola. At the time over 40,000 people were departing Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, Lagos to protest against the removal of fuel subsidy on Wednesday January 11, only a handful bothered to go to the Abuja National Stadium to watch the fully home-based Super Eagles play a friendly match against the Palancas Negras of Angola. The 2012 Africa Nations Cup-bound Angolans held the team of home-based players to a goalless draw. Fans were also denied the opportunity of watching the match on television, as it was not telecast. This is not unconnected with the…

I did not write off Ghana - Stephen Keshi
Following the controversy trailing his purported writing off of Ghana’s chances at the Africa Cup of Nations 2012, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has declared that he was misquoted. Black Stars assistant coach Kwesi Appiah had stoked the controversy last week when he said that Keshi’s statement about his team has challenged them to go further than their last silver medal finish at Angola 2010. Keshi has, however, said that he did not in anyway undermine the chances of Ghana. “I was asked to name my favourite teams to win the Nations Cup and I said on paper, Cote D’ Ivoire and Senegal have the strongest teams, but tournaments like this are full of surprises,” Keshi said. …

According to the press release, the Comoequa “features a bright yellow base colour inspired by the vibrancy of African culture, and links to the flags of both tournament hosts – Gabon and…

English club Arsenal to visit Nigeria in 2012
English side Arsenal will embark on a playing tour of Nigeria next year. A delegation from the club arrived Nigeria on Monday to inspect facilities ahead of the visit in July 2012. Nigeria is home to a huge number of Arsenal fans and this will enable the supporters to see their favourite stars like Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, Alexandre Song and Theo Walcott. “Arsenal will tour Nigeria ahead of the 2012/2013 season and will play against some selected Nigerian clubs,” Fifa match agent David Omigie told MTNFootball.com. “I am therefore leading a delegation that will include Arsenal Football Club’s head of marketing. Nigeria defeat Zambia 2-0 in Kaduna
Nigeria defeated Zambia 2-0 in an international friendly football match on Tuesday in Kaduna. The Uche brothers, Kalu and Ikechukwu, scored the goals that gave the Super Eagles victory over the Chipolopolo in Stephen Keshi’s second game in charge. The elder Kalu opened scoring for the Nigerians on 9minutes after a good pass from the right flank by winger Ahmed Musa who had beaten his marker to send in a cross. The Zambians tried without success to break the Nigerian backline even as they often dominated the midfield with impressive work by Rainford Kalaba who saw his first half short screech past Vincent Enyeama’s goal. Substitute goalkeeper Austin Ejide had his hands full in the second…
A 3-1 loss to Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina side brought Siasia’s Eagles down to earth after a soaring victory in Madagascar days earlier If image is everything, then the confused expression on Samson Siasia’s face on September 6 in faraway Dhaka, Bangladesh, after that cheeky, but brilliant run from Argentine and Barcelona football wizard, Lionel Messi, which left four Nigerian defenders lying in his wake, was a visual reminder that his Super Eagles team was far from being a finished product. The 3-1 loss to Argentina was also Siasia’s first competitive defeat as coach of the Eagles team. Fresh from a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Madagascar on Sunday, September 4, in a crucial 2012 African Cup of Nations Qualifier…

Beyond the Love of the Game
Countless young Nigerians, driven by the prospect of making money from the beautiful game and encouraged by their patrons, drop out of school to enrol in football academies mushrooming around the country By Tosin Taiwo Dare Olasupo, 15, was exhausted after a game of football recently. He sat panting and sweating profusely at the back of the goalpost, while his mates were scattered across the pitch, celebrating their team’s victory over a rival club. Olasupo, who lives at Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, is an aspiring professional football player. Like many of his teammates, he is dreaming of playing professional football in Europe some day. Unable to cope with the rigours of academic work, he dropped out of secondary school two years ago…
