Abiola Ajimobi of the Action Congress of Nigeria has won the election for the Oyo state governorship seat from results announced by INEC in Ibadan on Wednesday evening.

After a close race between Ajimobi and incumbent Christopher Alao-Akala of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ajimobi secured victory with the votes from the Ibadan South West local government. He polled 420,852 votes to Akala's 387,132. The Accord Party's Rasheed Ladoja polled 275,773 to finish third in a keenly contested election.

The city of Ibadan was tense as anxious residents awaited the final results. The ACN have now defeated the PDP in all the former strongholds having earlier taken Ogun state with Ibikunle Amosun's win.
