Drama in Bayelsa as members of the House of Assembly replace Speaker, Kombowei Benson with a former deputy speaker, Fini Angaye.
Benson, who about three months ago emerged as Speaker of the state house of assembly, was impeached by 16 members of the 24-member house, thus relinquishing power as Speaker to Angaye, a former deputy speaker during the tenure of former governor, Timipre Sylva.
Proceedings took about 30 minutes. Benson and Sam Ateki, his deputy, were absent.
Obedience Emoton, representing Ogbia Constituency II, moved the motion for the impeachment. Nestor Binabo, a former Speaker, then nominated Angaye, his former deputy for the position, which was accepted by all present.
Media men were barred from the sitting except for AIT and NTA correspondents, who were allowed access to floor of the House.
While it cannot be confirmed that the impeachment was influenced by the state governor, Seriake Dickson, Angaye speaking to newsmen, said, “Bayelsa State house of assembly has effected a change.”
