Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all time goal hero to score at the World Cup, and former African Footballer of the Year has died. He would have turned 49 on Oct. 23.
He died in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, May 4. Yekini who unarguably is one of Nigeria’s greates football stars, scoring 37 goals in 58 appearances represented Nigeria at the 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994 Africa Nations Cup finals.
He was said to have been ill of ailment related to mental disorder, which he has battled with for about two years now.
Tunji Moronfoye, commissioner for information, Kwara State, Yekini’s home state confirmed the sad news of his death.
He is survived by three wives and three children.
Yekini was interred in Offa, his hometown in Kwara according to Muslim rites, on Saturday, May 5.
