You’ve read that motivational book over and over. You’ve even listened to your favourite music but depression still hangs over you like a soaked coat. David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding, two nutrition experts on Yahoo Health, say you can get over bad mood with your choice of food. They are betting that dark chocolate, Greek yoghurt, honey and cherry tomatoes have the potential of getting energy to your brain faster than other self-help therapies.
Taking a few ounces of dark chocolate has been described as one of the best ways of giving your brain a treat. When your brain is tickled, there is very little room for depression and hangovers. According to Zinczenko, it “gives you an instant boost in mood and improves blood flow to your brain, helping you feel more vibrant and energised. Cocoa is the ingredient that does your body good,” he declared.
The Greek yoghurt is another consideration if you have happiness in mind. It is said to be richer in calcium and protein than regular milk and other types of yoghurt. According to the nutrition experts, a diet with inadequate calcium intake can lead to anxiety, impaired memory and slow thinking.
Move over to the beloved honey, if you want to be happy. Goulding has this to say about honey: “It has compounds like quercetin and kaempferol that reduce inflammation, keeping your brain healthy and warding off depression. Honey has a less dramatic impact on your blood sugar levels than sugar.”
If you’ve always loved tomatoes, stick to it. Zinczenko says the lycopene in cherry tomatoes is a powerful antioxidant with a nourishing effect on the brain. It is said to protect the brain from inflammation and is best served with a little olive oil. Other brain friendly and depression fighting food items are coconut and eggs.
